Whether it's Indian Parents or Parents in any part of the world wait for the progress report or report card of their ward every day with the same zeal and anxiousness. Instead of measuring rote memorisation through final exams relying heavily on numerical marks, percentages, and letter grades in core subjects, today the holistic progress card evaluates complete student development across cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
What Is the Holistic Progress Card?
Designed by PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development)—a body established under NCERT—the HPC provides a 360-degree, multidimensional evaluation of every student’s development.
New HPC cards focuses on :-
|
Domain |
What It Measures |
|
Cognitive |
Critical thinking, problem-solving, conceptual understanding |
| Affective |
Values, attitudes, empathy, social-emotional skills |
| Psychomotor | Physical coordination, arts, sports, hands-on skills |
Transitioning from rote memorisation to holistic development.
Why the HPC Was Created ?
The old system had a critical flaw. It confined the complex human potential to a few numbers. A child brilliant in Humanities but struggling with mathematics received the same label as a child who mastered formulas but lacked creativity. NEP 2020 concentrates on providing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary liberal education to the students.
PARAKH, the national assessment centre created under NEP, designed the HPC to set national standards for holistic evaluation. Its purpose is clear: to assess what truly matters—competencies, not just content.
What the HPC Actually Shows
At Delhi Premium School, HPC includes multiple dimensions that traditional report cards never captured:
1. Competency-Based Assessment
Students are evaluated on mastery of learning outcomes rather than percentage marks. For example, instead of scoring 78% in Mathematics, a child is assessed on whether they’ve mastered specific competencies like "applies mathematical reasoning to real-life problems".
2. Self, Peer, and Teacher Assessment
The HPC incorporates three perspectives:
• Self-assessment: Students reflect on their own learning journey
• Peer assessment: Classmates provide constructive feedback
• Teacher assessment: Professional evaluation of competencies
This triad builds metacognitive skills—the ability to think about one’s own thinking.
3. Multidimensional Growth Tracking
Beyond academics, the HPC tracks:
• Reading literacy levels
• Numeracy skills
• Physical and mental well-being
• Artistic expression
• Vocational engagement
• Social responsibility and values
4. Progress Over Time
Rather than a one-time snapshot, the HPC shows growth trajectories, helping parents and teachers identify where a child is improving and where they need assistance.
The 5+3+3+4 Framework and the HPC
The HPC aligns with NEP’s 5+3+3+4 curricular structure, which divides education into age-appropriate stages:
| Stage | Grades | Age | HPC Focus |
| Foundational | 3–5 | 3–8 | Play-based learning, ECCE principles |
|
Preparatory |
3–5 | 8–11 | Experiential learning in sciences, arts |
| Middle |
6–8 |
11–14 |
Critical thinking, subject-oriented pedagogy |
| Secondary | 9–12 | 14–18 | Subject flexibility, life aspirations, career mapping |
At each stage, the HPC evaluates age-appropriate competencies, ensuring assessment matches developmental needs.
How Delhi Premium School implements the HPC
As the Academic Head of Delhi Premium School, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the HPC transforms our educational ecosystem:
For Students
• Reduced anxiety around "failing" since assessment is multidimensional
• Greater self-awareness through regular self-reflection
• Motivation to develop diverse skills beyond academics
For Parents
• Clearer picture of their child’s strengths and growth areas
• Better understanding of competency-based learning
• Actionable insights to support learning at home
For Teachers
• More nuanced understanding of each student
• Data-driven interventions for struggling learners
• Ability to celebrate diverse forms of excellence
Our HPC now includes portfolios showcasing student work, project-based assessments, and experiential learning records from vocational courses introduced from Grade 6.
The Challenge: Shifting Mindsets
Implementing the HPC isn’t without challenges. Many parents initially ask, “But what percentage did my child score?” Transitioning from marks to competencies requires education—that’s why we conduct regular parent workshops explaining why a child’s worth cannot be measured by a single number.
Another challenge is teacher training. Evaluating affective and psychomotor domains requires new skills. We’ve invested heavily in professional development to ensure our teachers can assess empathy, creativity, and collaboration as rigorously as they once assessed memorisation.
The Road Ahead: 2026 and Beyond
A 2026 NEP implementation checklist outlines 12 actionable steps for schools before full compliance by 2027. Key priorities include:
1. Scaling HPC adoption across all grade levels
2. Digital integration for real-time progress tracking
3. Parent engagement programs on competency-based assessment
4. Standardisation through PARAKH’s national benchmarks
While implementation remains uneven across India, with rural-urban disparities and state-level delays, progressive schools like ours are proving that holistic assessment works.
Why the HPC Matters for India’s Future
The NEP 2020 was designed not merely to reform but to transform Indian education. The HPC is at the heart of this transformation. It prepares students for a world where 21st-century skills—critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and emotional intelligence—matter more than rote memorisation.
As India moves toward becoming a $5 trillion economy, we need learners who can solve complex problems, innovate, and adapt. The HPC shapes exactly that kind of learner.
The Holistic Progress Card is more than a new report card format—it’s a philosophical shift in how we view education. It recognises that every child is unique, that excellence takes many forms, and that true success cannot be reduced to a percentage.
At Delhi Premium School, we’re proud to be part of this transformative journey. The HPC isn’t just measuring our students differently—it’s helping them become their best selves.
